The SWANS Charter members were a creative group of women whose talents surpassed their roles as educators. They brought those gifts to the organization. They were dancers, singers, community organizers, writers and artists.
The charter members were the late Gloria Bijol, Hilda Smith Bujol, Evelyn Carroll, Lucille Johnson Carroll, Edna James Crockem, Doris Bujol Jones, Ethel Hurks James, Betsy B. Hammond, Angeline Brown Harris, and Margarete Carter Houston. Within the first year, Ruth Vinnett Blue, Geraldine Braud Bernard, Rosalie B. Bradford, Mayme Dennis Gardner and Aletha Greigs Bardell became members.
